I enjoyed the discussion from class. Its was neat to see how different fields of engineering can overlap each other. I think this is great for different fields working together like the EE's and computer engineers. Also I learned a lot more about Electrical Engineering, I always assumed that EE's were in charge of power plants, energy distribution, and wiring systems for many different things, I never really thought of them being such a big part of computers, and electronic hardware.
I liked this article because in shows how different fields are used in the development of just one product. The article is about Fairfield University Engineering students, who are developing a device to detect your bone density. This device is called an Infrared Bone Densitometer and Photoplethysmograph. The device is a non-invasive way to detect bone density loss by using infrared light to record an individuals bone density and blood flow. This will be very helpful for to keep track of the bone densities in aging patients who have osteoporosis, and by astronauts so they can keep track of their bone density while in space.
The students received a grant form the Connecticut Space Grant College Consortium to help develop the device, which is affiliated with NASA. The different engineering fields that are being used in the development of this device are mechanical, software, electrical, computer, automated manufacturing. This article is a perfect example how different fields of engineering are used in a project.
The last class and this article has shown me how even as a Civil Engineer I might find myself working with the other engineering fields. They have also shown me how it is a good idea have at least a minimal understanding of the other engineering fields, because you might find yourself working with them or for them.
During the discussion in class, I found it very useful that we could ask questions. What I found interesting was how he explained his life in college and how it is important to actually learn the information you obtain from your classes instead of just trying to get the grade and paper. Another point he brought up was not only learning the skills but learning how to communicate to other engineers the certain terms needed in order help them understand you as clearly as possible.
http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1320855 I chose the article Imaging Goes Hyperspectral. There has been a big growth in this topic. Hyperspectral Imaging can capture images over a spectral range enabling detailed analysis and identification of objects. A practical use this can be used for is sorting fruit for farmers. Why I found this interesting was there could be so many practical uses for this. It can be used for military, or using it for being able to track people in Forrest. Having this will open up a new technology that we will be able to provide for a new generation.
